Romantic candlelit dinner table setting Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to mean a rushed prix-fixe dinner with 200 strangers. Chicago’s restaurant and bakery scene makes staying in genuinely special.

Let’s be honest about Valentine’s Day restaurant dining: prix-fixe menus, double the usual price, tables turned over every 90 minutes, and a room full of couples all trying to have the same romantic evening at once.

There’s a better way.

Chicago has some of the best independent bakeries, restaurants, and cocktail bars in the country — and many of them have figured out how to bring that experience directly to you. Whether you want a stunning cake, a restaurant-quality dinner for two, or a cocktail kit that turns your living room into a proper bar, it’s all here.

Here’s my guide to a genuinely special Valentine’s Day at home in Chicago.

Start with Something Sweet

An elegant heart-shaped cake with chocolate glaze The right dessert sets the tone for the whole evening.

TOUS les JOURS

This popular Asian-French bakery brings genuine artistry to their Valentine’s specials. Think heart-shaped themed cakes, beautifully packaged macaron sets, and chocolate boxes that look almost too good to eat. Pre-order online — their Valentine’s items go fast and the quality is genuinely exceptional.

West Town Bakery

The one you’ve probably seen all over Instagram: their Chocolate Smashed Heart Cake comes with a mini hammer so you can ceremonially break it open together. It’s theatrical, it’s delicious, and it makes for a genuinely memorable moment. Call ahead — inventory is limited and they’re worth the effort to track down.

Klein’s Bakery

If the smashed heart cake sells out elsewhere (it will), Klein’s has their own version plus a full range of Valentine’s specials at prices that won’t make you wince. Their online menu is easy to navigate and the quality is consistently great.

Eli’s Cheesecake

Chicago’s most iconic cheesecake institution, located on the Northwest Side. Their Valentine’s lineup includes a Giant Be My Valentine Cookie, a Chocolate Crispy Heart, and multiple heart-shaped cheesecake varieties. Both pickup and delivery available — which matters on a day when you don’t want to leave the house.

Make Dinner the Main Event

A heart-shaped deep dish pizza from a Chicago pizzeria Chicago deep dish in heart shape is the most unapologetically romantic thing in the city.

Lou Malnati’s — Heart-Shaped Deep Dish

Lou Malnati’s is the gold standard of Chicago deep dish, and they offer heart-shaped versions of their pies for Valentine’s Day through February 16th. You can customize your own or choose from their special menu. It’s indulgent, it’s iconic, and it’s Chicago to its core.

Ranalli’s — Pizza + Wine Package

Order online to get their Valentine’s special: a heart-shaped pizza (up to 2 toppings) plus a bottle of rosé for $35. As a deal, this is almost unfair. As a date night, it’s perfect.

Connie’s Pizza — Heart-Shaped Thin Crust

Love thin crust more than deep dish? Connie’s offers a heart-shaped create-your-own thin crust pizza with a full range of toppings. The concept is simple, the customization is fun, and the result is exactly the kind of laid-back, delicious evening that actually feels special.

Upgrade Your Drinks

A beautifully crafted cocktail with garnishes Chicago’s cocktail scene doesn’t stop at the bar — many of the city’s best programs now come to you.

MACHINE (Wicker Park)

Located in the heart of Wicker Park, MACHINE serves an innovative craft cocktail program and their take-home kits are genuinely impressive. Each kit yields up to 16 drinks for $70 or under — making this a great option if you want to invite another couple and make an evening of it.

The Violet Hour — Valentine’s Cocktails to Go

The Violet Hour is one of Chicago’s most celebrated cocktail bars, and their Valentine’s edition offers three tiers:

  • Couples package ($95): 3 two-serving cocktails + a mini bottle of Moët Champagne + small gifts
  • Solo package ($20): 2 one-serving cocktails
  • Galentine’s package ($75): 1 large-format cocktail (32oz, serves 8)

The quality here is exceptional — these are proper bartender-crafted cocktails, not mixes.

Las Fuentes (Lincoln Park)

A family-owned Mexican spot that doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves. Their in-house margaritas are some of the best in the city, and they offer a full range of drinks plus great takeout food — meaning you can do everything from one place. Show some love to a local family business.

The Whistler (Logan Square)

A bar, gallery, record label, and music venue all in one, The Whistler offers pre-mixed cocktails, fresh-squeezed juices, and a Valentine’s Cocktail for Two package — two bottled cocktails with 4–5 servings each. Delivered to your door.

Fine Dining, Elevated Pickup

If you want the full restaurant experience without leaving home, these places deliver it in the most literal sense:

BAVETTE’S Bar & Boeuf (River North)

The splurge option. Their Valentine’s pickup is a 4-course Dry Aged Ribeye Dinner for two at $195 — ready to eat the moment you get home, no reheating required. The menu includes King Crab or Crab Cake, Wedge or Caesar Salad, a 22oz Dry Aged Ribeye, Mashed Potatoes, Charred Broccoli, Truffle Mac & Cheese, and your choice of Chocolate Cream Pie or Carrot Cake. If you’re going to splurge, this is where to do it.

Geja’s Cafe (Lincoln Park)

Chicago’s fondue institution. Their At-Home Fondue Experience includes Swiss Gruyere cheese fondue with breads, apples, and veggies, Geja’s signature salad, your choice of proteins with eight house-made sauces, and a Dark Belgian chocolate fondue finale. It’s interactive, it’s intimate, and fondue is genuinely one of the best formats for a date night dinner.

il Porcellino (River North)

Italian, approachable, and well-priced. Their dinner for two ($99.95) features Clams Positano, Crispy Brussels Sprouts, Prime-Beef Meatballs, Lobster Fra Diavolo, and Short Rib with Truffle Polenta. Excellent value for the quality.

Mon Ami Gabi (Lincoln Park)

French bistro energy, Parisian Valentine’s menu. The Je T’Aime dinner for two ($150) includes Lobster Bisque, Little Gem Salad, and your choice of Filet of Beef Tenderloin or Skate Wing, finished with a Chocolate Caramel Tart. Classic, elegant, and genuinely romantic.

Sapori Trattoria (Lincoln Park)

The value champion at $57 per couple: appetizer, salad, two pasta dishes, a shared dessert, and a drink. Italian, warm, and completely unpretentious. Perfect if you want the full experience without the full price tag.

Add an Activity

A couple making homemade pizza together in a kitchen DIY kits turn dinner into an experience.

Sometimes the best part of the evening is making something together. Chicago has great options:

DIY Pizza Kits: Blaze Pizza, Stella Barra, and Gino’s East all offer kits with everything you need to build your own pie at home.

Cocktail Mixology Class: Take a Master Class online, or book a session with The Silver Sun Group for a guided virtual experience.

DIY Cookie Kits: Vanille Patisserie and Ace Hotel Chicago both offer beautifully packaged kits that are more than an activity — they’re a dessert.

The best Valentine’s Days I’ve had in Chicago weren’t at restaurants. They were evenings where the food was great, the drinks were thoughtful, and we weren’t checking the time because a table was being held for someone else.

Make it yours. Chicago’s restaurant community has done the hard work for you.
